Perfect

Perfect for what you described. I'm sure with that art that it was totally appropriate. You're making me curious about this game, lol. Is it flash-based? If it is make them upload it!!

The song isn't very long, and I mean it's nothing I'd listen to in the car or anything, but for a menu where you wanted it to feel post-apocalyptic and have the player have a feeling of abandonment, it's a great tune. Keep at it.

It's a little cynical to title a review "perfect" and then give a score of 7. :P Of course I get the idea that this piece isn't very impressive taken out of the context but it's kinda paradox. ;) Anyhow, thanks for the review.

And the game is based on Unreal Engine 3 so it's rather not stuff for Newgrounds. You can find actual gameplay footage on YouTube though. Check out the channel of MrMartinFischer (but be warned: it's not very impressive stuff since they removed about half of the game's content due to lack of time and technical problems).

Nice

I love the sound this has, it fits a shooter game really well. It has a very dark and battle-appropriate sound to it...more like a sneaking around in enemy territory sound really. It's nice and lengthy as well.

The percussion is toned down and blends amazingly. It has a real professional sound to it. The mixing on this track is almost flawless. Not sure what instrument the brass noise is, but it also sounds very good. Especially the two of them playing at once.

The notes you picked are very daunting, and just create a really perfect mood for a shooter game. I can see this being played at the Modern Warfare 2 main menu no problem, although I think this sounds a bit more dark than that game.

Overall a fantastic song/loop. Keep up the great work.

F4LL0UT responds:

Thanks for the kind words. "Sneaking around in enemy territory" is pretty close to the idea behind this piece. I wouldn't ever use such a piece in a game based in an "authentic" scenario such as Modern Warfare 2 (and personally I despise the CoD franchise) but I'll take it as a compliment. ;)

Meh

It's okay, but overall not that moving in my opinion. The beginning sounds okay, I have no complaints about that at all really. It's when the horn comes in that it sounds almost a tad bit obnoxious. It just doesn't sound like a very pleasant kind of horn, it sounds like the kind of horn that makes me reach for the volume knob to turn it down, so in my opinion, I'd turn it down a tad. The background horn is fine to me.

It's an okay loop, it doesn't make much sense to me to loop the way it does, but I suppose it works alright. The instruments sound okay though...the poppy bass line sounds okay to me, as well as the mellow percussion, and the background horn - just the main blaring horn is a bit overkill to me. Sounds too alarming.

Overall not a bad little tune though, just nothing really special either.

Thanks for the review!

The piece wasn't meant to be moving anyways, it was supposed to simply be a track to listen to in the background.

As for the brass, I guess it's all a matter of percetion, as I quite enjoy them! (Also, it's two horns you're hearing, the sax and the trumpet.)

Glad you still liked it!

Cheers

Not half bad

Well, let it be known right off the bat that rap is not my thing at all. I listen to almost none, but I must admit I find this song pretty catchy.

I wanna say that most of it is because of the beat that you didn't even make, but without a good rap to it, there's no way I would have downloaded this.

The rap is pretty much flawless. I honestly can't point out any flaws in it, and the same with the beat. The beat isn't repetitive at all, it's actually more complex than I expected and you flowed to the song perfectly. The vocal echo effects you used were a really nice touch and they all seem appropriately placed.

The video game references and general theme of the song is hilarious, and adds a lot of character to the song, instead of some mindless song about you getting high or something we've all heard a million times over.

To say the least, I'm impressed, and I've recently tried to rate things on a much stricter scale than ever before, but I must honestly say this track deserves a solid 9. As far as lasting effect goes, only time will tell. I actually downloaded this which is surprising to me, so I must say, keep up the good work - this is good.

Oh, and you should post the lyrics in the author comments.

glitchs2d responds:

Haha thanks and I play a lot of games so they have to be incorperated in my lyrics somehow. There is also a transformers refence in there to. I might post up the lyrics its just I hate typing all of it out you know.

Wow!

What a change from the other song I just reviewed. Nice, crisp, and clear. How pleasant - I did not expect this at all to be honest.

The ending to this does sound a bit odd...was that intentional playing with the instrument? Not sure what to make of it, as this is a very short sample. It would have been much more enjoyable if the entire song was here, or even a longer sample at that.

The recording from the last submission of yours I reviewed is FAR better. It sounds 100% better in every way - except at the end....still not sure what that was, as it sounds a bit glitched...

Well, now that you've got a good recording setup I look forward to hearing some new tracks with it ;) Maybe even continue to add on to them in FL. Do the mild echo you've done before, maybe with some light background pads for extra effect, or even some percussion. The possibilities are endless. I'd just personally like to hear something much longer than a very short sample.

Keep it up.

AccountableMasses responds:

yeah, this sort of surprised me too.

Pretty much took the mic, put it into a gumball dispenser, filled with rags...
Edited it in FL8 to take out the noise... and got this...

Must be all the filters that screwed up the ending... anyways thanks for the review.

Well

I hate to give you such a low score, but I'll tell you why this isn't to my liking.

I'm sure this sounds great in person, but the recording is pretty flawed. It sounds muffled for the most part and I can hear a lot of crackling. I'm not sure if it was intentional, but there's a strange panning going from channel to channel and it sounds really out of place for something like this. It wouldn't suit something like a trumpet recording at all, which, in my opinion you would want to be as crisp and clear as possible I would imagine.

I played the trumpet for a few years, as does my grandpa, and it sounds like you know what you're doing. The trumpet playing itself isn't the issue at all - I seriously think you need to invest in a different recording medium. Now back in the day when I recorded guitar tracks, I used a shitty mic and windows sound recorder and it sounded a lot like this, although I've since changed and started doing electronic music instead - thus - I have no recording advice for you...

Overall what I'm trying to say is that I'm not insulting you as a musician, but I'm not really sure what advice to give you either. I'm not sure what the best way to record a trumpet would be really, but whatever microphone you've got doesn't seem able to handle it. I'd consider buying another one if you'd really like to clean this up and continue to reach out to others with your music. A crisp and clean version of this would be fantastic.

I noticed the mild echo you put in, and it sounded good with the recording. It was just so muffled, crackled, and panning left to right so much that it was almost impossible to enjoy as it stands.

Keep at it though, and I hope I'm not coming across in any way as insulting. I'm just being honest with you as to why I did not enjoy this much and trying to give you as much constructive criticism as possible.

AccountableMasses responds:

yeah.... but used a crappy mic from wally world and windows recorder and got a better sound out of it. Or a video camera then ripped the audio that way.

So went to buy another one from a music store and man....
This one picks up everything!

Anyways, yeah, still learning how to do and master recordings. Not sure about the mic, that half the problem....the place I record is there other half.

Was aiming for a church like sound where I play sometimes at church on Sundays and used alot of filters just to cut down on background noise....

I've only been playing again for a year, but used play back in high school, and that was like 11 years ago..

Again, thanks for the review...
maybe should buy that horn mic after all.

I develop stuff.
